Philosphy | Design Reasoning

I like to apply design reasoning to design projects. I follow a five-step process. I take the time to understand why  clients are passionate about their business and learn about their business goals;

  • Is it to gain more followers?
  • Get the word out about their business?
  • Sell more products?
  • Drive more traffic to your site?

Next, I take the information and discover what is currently working, who the competition is, and opportunities for improvement. Based on research, the client and I can start brainstorming and start designing from our ideas. Once the product is complete, we can begin measuring our success and build upon them.

Step One | Understand

It is essential to get to know both the client and their business.  I like to “walk a mile in their shoes,” by spending time with the client, a learn about their day-to-day business experience. I begin to learn about their current process, who their audience is and identify any potential performance-boosting activities.  I take the time to learn what the client is passionate about and their business goals.

Step Two | Discover

This stage brings clarity and focuses on determining the problem that needs addressing. Many times, the issue we identify is not the problem we initially thought we needed to solve. We gather information by researching the needs of both the client and the business.  We analyze areas of success and uncover areas of improvement.  We examine the competitors and review new marketing trends. These activities help start to generate ideas to solve the problem.

Step Three | Visualize

We can start generating ideas with the information we have collected from Step Two. Both the client and the design team work together to develop as many ideas and examples as possible. Once the examples are reviewed, a concept is selected. Then the ideas are visualized by creating mock-ups of what the concept would look like in the real world.

Step Four | Design

The next step is building the product, whether it be a new logo, website face-lift, or social media campaign. Based on the mock-ups we liked, we can start designing. The design phase is where ideas come to life. Ideas become tangible objects, and we get to find out what works and what needs tweaking to fit the defined business goals.

Step Five | Measure Success

This step is where we learn from the users.  The design ready to be tested with the users. This step can lead us back to the previous step for design revisions based on the feedback of the users provide to help us refine the design or add new ideas to support the business goals.
